One of the most common questions we hear at Richmond Eye Experts is: “Why are you using my medical insurance? I have vision insurance.”
The answer depends on why you are seeing the eye doctor that day. Vision plans and medical insurance serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you know what to expect and why your doctor may bill one plan instead of the other.
What Does Vision Insurance Cover?
Vision plans such as VSP, EyeMed, Spectera, Superior Vision, and Davis Vision are generally designed for routine vision care.
Depending on your plan, benefits may include:
- A routine annual eye exam
- A refraction for your glasses prescription
- An allowance toward eyeglass frames
- Basic eyeglass lenses
- Discounts or copays on lens upgrades
- An allowance toward contact lenses
- In some cases, part of the contact lens fitting
Vision coverage does not mean everything is free.
Many vision plans work more like a benefit or discount program than traditional medical insurance. Your plan may provide a set allowance toward frames or contacts along with negotiated pricing on certain lens options. If you choose products beyond what the plan includes, you are responsible for the difference.
Your exact benefits depend on your specific plan.
What Does Medical Insurance Cover?
Medical insurance is used when the purpose of the visit is to evaluate, monitor, or treat a medical eye condition.
Examples may include:
- Eye infections
- Dry eye
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Diabetic eye disease
- Macular degeneration
- Dry eye disease
- Flashes and floaters
- Sudden vision changes
- Eye injuries
Medical insurance may also cover medically necessary testing such as OCT imaging, visual fields, fundus photography, and other diagnostic procedures, depending on your diagnosis and plan.
Medical insurance often does not cover refraction, which is the testing used to determine your glasses prescription. Paying for this service may be a separate patient responsibility.
Why Does the Doctor Decide Which Insurance to Use?
The insurance plan billed is based primarily on the reason for your visit and the care provided.
If you come in because of eye pain, flashes and floaters, dry eye symptoms, an infection, or another medical concern, the visit is generally considered medical eye care.
If you are coming in mainly for a routine annual exam and an updated glasses prescription, your vision plan may be used.
Sometimes a patient schedules a routine exam, but the doctor discovers a condition that requires additional medical evaluation or testing. Patients with known conditions such as glaucoma or diabetic eye disease may also require medical monitoring. The doctor and clinic are contractually obligated to bill the visit based on the reason for the examination, the diagnosis, and the services provided.
Why Use Your VSP or EyeMed Benefits at an In-Network Private Office?
Many patients assume that a warehouse or retail optical location will automatically be less expensive. That is not always the case. If you have VSP, EyeMed, or another vision plan, it is worth checking your benefits at an in-network private eye-care office before purchasing glasses.
Vision plans may provide special pricing, allowances, or reduced copays when you use participating providers.
At Richmond Eye Experts, our office carries premium lens technologies, including Varilux XR progressive lenses, premium Crizal anti-reflective coatings, high-index lenses, Transitions Generation 8, and other customized options.
Depending on your plan, some of these upgrades may receive insurance allowances, reduced copays, or negotiated pricing. This means your insurance may help subsidize a higher-quality lens product that would otherwise cost significantly more.
Some warehouse and retail locations may participate with certain vision plans, but the products, allowances, and benefits available can differ. A lower advertised price does not always mean you are receiving the best product or getting the most value from your insurance.
We Check Your Benefits Before Your Visit
Insurance can be confusing, so we try to make the process as clear as possible. At Richmond Eye Experts, our staff works to verify your insurance benefits before your appointment whenever possible. If we identify an exam copay or other important benefit information, we may send you a text before your appointment so you know what to expect.
Our team is also very diligent about having eyewear benefits verified before you make a glasses or contact lens purchase.
Our opticians can help explain:
- Your frame allowance
- Your lens benefits
- Your expected copays
- Your contact lens allowance
- Which upgrades may receive insurance discounts
- Your estimated out-of-pocket cost
Note that insurance benefits vary by employer, plan, diagnosis, provider network, and service. Benefit verification is not a guarantee of payment by your insurance company.
Our goal is not simply to find the cheapest pair of glasses. We want to help you get the best product for your needs while making the most of the benefits you already have.
The Bottom Line
Vision insurance is primarily designed for routine eye exams, glasses, and contact lens benefits.
Medical insurance is used for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of eye disease and medical eye problems.
Vision insurance also does not mean that every frame, lens, coating, or contact lens is fully covered. Most plans include a combination of allowances, copays, negotiated prices, and discounts.
At Richmond Eye Experts, our goal is to help you understand your benefits before your visit or eyewear purchase so you can make informed decisions and avoid unexpected costs.
