I have personally experienced a corneal abrasion, which is a scratch on the clear front surface of the eye. Even a small abrasion can be extremely painful, causing tearing, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and the feeling that something is stuck in the eye.

My experience reinforced something I tell patients often: protecting your eyes is much easier than treating an injury after it happens.

Protect Your Eyes During DIY Projects

Many eye injuries happen during routine jobs around the house. You should wear safety glasses whenever there is a chance that debris, dust, sparks, or chemicals could reach your eyes.

This includes:

Mowing or trimming the lawn

Grinding, drilling, or cutting metal

Hammering nails, cutting wood, or using power tools

Working around dust, sparks, or flying debris

Handling chemicals

Welding

Lawn equipment can throw rocks and sticks toward the face at high speed. Metalwork can send tiny fragments into the eye. These particles may become embedded in the cornea and can sometimes leave a rust ring if they are not removed properly.

If you think metal, glass, wood, or another object has entered the eye, do not try to dig it out yourself. Call your eye doctor so the eye can be examined under magnification.

Regular Glasses Are Not Safety Glasses

Prescription glasses and sunglasses are not designed to protect your eyes from flying debris or a hard impact.

For home projects, use impact-rated safety glasses that fit securely and provide protection from the front and sides. Depending on the job, you may also need goggles, a face shield, or proper welding protection.

Protect Your Eyes During Sports

A sports eye injury can happen in a split second. A ball, shuttlecock, racquet, paddle, elbow, hand, or fingernail can reach the eye before you have time to react.

Basketball, racquetball, badminton, and pickleball are all sports where protective eyewear can make a difference.

One injury I commonly see is a corneal abrasion from another player’s fingernail. Blunt impacts can also injure structures inside the eye, even when the eye does not look badly injured from the outside.

Regular eyeglasses are not sports protection. Polycarbonate sports goggles are a better choice because they are designed to resist impact and stay more securely in place. Eye protection is important for children and adults, including during practice and casual games.

What to Do If an Eye Injury Happens

For most scratches, impacts, or possible foreign bodies, do not rub the eye and do not try to remove an embedded object. Avoid leftover prescription drops and home remedies. Artificial tears can be used for comfort while you arrange an examination.

If a chemical gets into the eye, rinse immediately with clean, lukewarm water and call for urgent guidance.

If something appears to be stuck in or penetrating the eye, do not press on the eye or attempt to remove it.

Most importantly, call the eye care office as soon as possible and explain what happened. During regular business hours, Richmond Eye Experts accepts emergency walk-in patients as long as the doctor is in the office.

Call promptly if you have:

Sudden or decreased vision

Severe or worsening pain

Significant light sensitivity

Persistent tearing or difficulty opening the eye

A visible foreign object, bleeding, flashes, floaters, or a shadow in your vision

Make Eye Protection a Habit

Keep safety glasses next to your tools and lawn equipment, and store sports goggles with your athletic gear. The goal is simple: make eye protection part of the activity before an injury has the chance to happen.

As someone who treats eye injuries and has personally experienced one, I can tell you that the few seconds it takes to put on the right protection are well worth it.

About the Author

Dr. Jordana Chettiparampil is the Chief Medical Officer at Richmond Eye Experts.
